Lists of Perils Covered, Not Covered and Cases of Limited Coverage

There are many different types of events that may occur that can inflict damage upon your property or possessions. The majority of these events or perils, as they are called in insurance policies, are covered under most policies. Here is a broad list of the perils that are usually included in standard policies that insure both homes and businesses:

  • Fire
  • Smoke
  • Lightning
  • Windstorms
  • Hail
  • Explosions
  • Civil Commotions or Unrest or Riots
  • Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
  • Theft
  • Falling Objects
  • Weight of Ice
  • Snow or Sleet
  • Water Damage
  • Damage Caused by Aircraft or Other Vehicles
  • Damage Like Flooding
  • Freezing or Burning Caused by a Malfunction In Pipes or Plumbing
  • HVAC Systems or Other Appliances
  • Damage Caused by an Electrical System

There is also a list of typical types of perils that are not included in most standard policies but can ordinarily be purchased and covered under separate, additional policies:

Flood Insurance also known as Overland Flood Insurance and Overland Water Insurance is one of the most common types of additional coverage that property owners or renters purchase. Also in this category are coverage for earthquakes, war, nuclear accidents, landslides, mudslides and sinkholes. Every policy varies to some degree so it is important to carefully read what types of perils are excluded in every policy.

As well, there is a list of possessions that is covered to a limit in most policies. The following items are in the limited coverage category: computers and computer software, manuscripts and personal documents, jewelry, gemstones and watches, cash, negotiable securities and cash cards, furs, fine arts, bicycles and sporting equipment, coin, stamp and card collections, antiques. It is usually possible to obtain additional coverage for these belongings.

There are so many different perils that may occur that it is sometimes difficult determining which ones you are covered for and how much you are entitled to, in the event of an unfortunate occurrence. For this reason and a few others it is advisable that a policy holder contacts a public adjuster, lawyer or other insurance claim expert when claims are made or questions about them arise.
